Solar Panels – How long will my system last and how are they maintained?

Solar panels are a great way to save money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint. But how long can you expect them to last? And what factors affect their performance and lifespan?

In this post, we will answer these questions and provide some tips on how to make your solar panels last longer.

The industry standard for most solar panels’ lifespans is 25 to 30 years. Most reputable manufacturers offer production warranties for 25 years or more, which guarantee a certain level of output over that period. For example, a typical warranty might state that the panels will produce at least 80% of their original capacity after 25 years.

However, this does not mean they will stop working after 25 or 30 years. They will continue to produce electricity but at a lower rate. The rate of degradation depends on several factors, such as the type and quality of the panels, the installation and maintenance, and the environmental conditions.

How are solar panels made?

There are two main types of solar panels: monocrystalline and polycrystalline. Monocrystalline panels are made from single-crystal silicon cells, while polycrystalline panels are made from multiple-crystal silicon cells. Monocrystalline panels tend to have higher efficiency and a lower degradation rate than polycrystalline panels. According to the American Solar Energy Society, monocrystalline panels can last up to 40 years, while polycrystalline panels can last up to 35 years.

The quality of the panels also matters. Higher-quality panels have better materials, components, and manufacturing processes, which result in lower degradation rates and longer lifespans. Some premium brands, such as Panasonic and LG, offer panels with degradation rates as low as 0.3% per year, which means they can retain more than 90% of their original output after 25 years.

How do you improve the lifespan of solar panels?

The installation and maintenance of the panels also affect their longevity. Proper installation ensures that the panels are securely mounted, well-aligned, and connected correctly. Regular maintenance involves cleaning the panels from dust, dirt, leaves, bird droppings, and other debris that can reduce their efficiency. It also involves checking for any cracks, chips, corrosion, or loose connections that can damage the panels or cause safety issues.

Environmental conditions also play a role in the lifespan of solar panels. Extreme temperatures, humidity, wind, hail, snow, and UV exposure can all cause wear and tear on the panels over time. Some regions may have more harsh weather than others, which can accelerate the degradation process. However, most modern solar panels are designed to withstand these conditions and meet certain standards of durability and reliability.

So how can you make your solar panels last longer?

Here are some tips:

  • Choose high-quality panels from reputable manufacturers that offer long warranties and low degradation rates.
  • Hire an MCS-accredited installer who can ensure proper installation and optimal performance of your system.
  • Clean your panels regularly or install a self-cleaning system that can remove dirt and dust automatically.
  • Inspect your panels periodically or use a monitoring system that can alert you of any issues or faults.
  • Repair or replace any damaged or malfunctioning panels as soon as possible.
  • Consider adding a battery storage system that can store excess solar energy and reduce the stress on your panels.

By following these tips, you can extend the lifespan of your solar panels and enjoy the benefits of clean and renewable energy for decades.
